We have a duty to provide banking services to the general public and specific groups of clients. This duty to provide services covers five main sectors.
The mortgage business is one of the mainstays of our business activity. We promote construction by awarding small mortgages and loans to house-building cooperatives. Projects which pay attention to environmental compatibility benefit from special terms.
A dense network of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is of great economic importance. We therefore offers these companies a wide range of services. In addition, it encourages entrepreneurial innovation, helps with the restructuring of companies which are fundamentally capable of survival, grants start-up assistance to young entrepreneurs, and thus safeguards jobs.
As we do not aim to maximise our profits, it can cultivate less lucrative branches of the banking business as well, serve groups of clients with lower potential returns, and take account of economic, social and ecological aspects in its business policy.
With more than 100 outlets, we have the densest network of branches in the canton of Zurich. These include part-time agencies in rural regions. These agencies are mainly active in villages with 500 to 2'000 inhabitants which for commercial reasons would not be served by the big banks.
The public service mandate also covers operation of the pawnbroking agency. The pawnbroking agency grants loans of CHF 10 and over at very reasonable interest rates. Its annual deficit is borne by Zürcher Kantonalbank.
