Documentary letter of credit

The bank instructed by the buyer provides an irrevocable undertaking to pay a fixed amount to the seller if the seller presents the specified documents for the goods within a given validity period.
Protects the buyer, who only pays if the goods are delivered.
Protects the seller against the risk of supplying goods without quid pro quo.

Documentary collections

The seller instructs the bank to hand over the documents for the goods to the buyer only against payment of a fixed amount.
Protects the seller against the risk of supplying goods without quid pro quo - however, in contrast to a documentary letter of credit, there is no obligation to pay.
